Ep 206 - Leading and Keeping Parallelpreneurs Engaged - Workology

Ep 206 - Leading and Keeping Parallelpreneurs Engaged - Workology How Systems and Productivity Drive Success   With the number of people having side hustles, gig work, and what experts refer to as “parallelpreneurs,” employers are often conflicted. Should we be supporting these employees in their entrepreneurial efforts or should we send them off to greener pastures? And how can we keep them engaged in their work for us? This podcast is sponsored by ClearCompany. Ep 206: Leading and Keeping Parallelpreneurs Engaged (@kim_ikemia_arrington) Today we’re talking to business coach Kim Ikemia Arringon. Kim is the Founder CEO of Courageant Consulting and Career Advisors, as well as Senior Diversity Recruiting Officer and Program Manager for a company in the DC Metro area. I asked Kim to tell us what a parallelprenuer actually is. She says parallelprenuers are living literally in the parallel world where they are working in part-time and/or full-time jobs who are also running or starting a business thats outside of their employment. A long time ago I was a parallelprenuer, and it was tough but also fun and exciting. Kim works with parallelprenuers and professionals who are wanting more out of their jobs as a business and career coach. Theres two major factors that help to continue the success of what I do. And thats having the support or team and the systems to help you stay afloat. - @kim_ikemia_arrington #smallbusiness #sidehustle #podcast Click To Tweet How Systems and Productivity Drive Success   Kim shares that these dual focused business professionals are busy and they are master taskers who are all about being productive. The key to productivity starts with having a system and process that aligns and supports your business. For example, we talk about having scheduling tools and technologies for things like social media to help promote your business and engage your audience even when you are working your 9-5. This is one of the reasons why I think that employers should want to work with entrepreneurs. Out of necessity they are skilled at balancing their time, energy, and doing that at optimum levels. These in my mind are special skills that employers can really jump on and leverage. Kim shares some of her favorite tools to help drive productivity for those aspiring parallelprenuers or indivduals who want to up their productivity game. Google Drive, Trello, Dropbox and Zoom are just a few. You also must listen to Kims secrets to creating content with limited time. I love her thought process and agree with it for sure! Lastly, Kim says that outsourcing is critical to be successful with managing your life, your job, and side hustle. I love this tip because I think we often feel like we need to experience struggle to be successful. However, the real key is finding ways to do more with less and that includes getting help and support from family, friends, and hired support in the form of house keepers and Instacart shoppers to help you do more with less. How to Retain Your Parallelprenuers   These workers are moving fast, goal-driven, and are working towards their own plans personally and professionally. Since these workers in my experience are some of your top performers, employers want to know how to keep them around, working, and engaged. It starts with building that personal relationships and acknowledging their goals and finding ways to support them. Doing so will help keep them engaged in their jobs and drive productivity because they appreciate your interest, concern, and support. Conclusion In our current talent marketplace, employees prize autonomy over many things. Restricting side hustles completely isn’t the answer, but encouraging innovation and considering the “why” around why your employees are reaching outside of your company to start their own businesses is important. With the rise of the gig economy putting earning control in the hands of the individual, restrictive policies around moonlighting could negatively impact your employer brand. I’m so glad to have Kim with us today to share her expertise and her own experience. Connect with Kim Ikemia. RECOMMENDED RESOURCES Kim on Instagram Is Your Employee Doing Side Work? The 6 Things You Should Never Sacrifice for Your JobNo Matter What

The 6 Things You Should Never Sacrifice for Your Jobâ€"No Matter What The 6 Things You Should Never Sacrifice for Your Job-No Matter What The commonplace workday is long enough for what it's worth, and innovation is making it considerably more. At the point when you do at long last return home from an entire day at the workplace, your cell phone rings free, and messages drop into your inbox from individuals who anticipate quick reactions. While a great many people guarantee to detach when they return home, ongoing exploration says something else. An investigation directed by the American Psychological Association found that over half of us browse work email when work hours, consistently, and in any event, when we're debilitated. Far more atrocious, 44% of us browse work email while in the midst of a get-away. A Northern Illinois University study that came out this mid year shows exactly how terrible this degree of association truly is. The investigation found that the desire that individuals need to react to messages during off-work hours delivers a drawn out pressure reaction, which the scientists named telepressure. Telepressure guarantees that you are always unable to unwind and really withdraw from work. This drawn out condition of pressure is horrible for your wellbeing. Other than expanding your danger of coronary illness, sorrow, and corpulence, stress diminishes your intellectual execution. We have to build up limits between our own and expert lives. At the point when we don't, our work, our wellbeing, and our own lives endure. Reacting to messages during off-work hours isn't the main zone where you have to define limits. You have to make the basic differentiation between what has a place with your boss and what has a place with you and you in particular. The things that follow are yours. On the off chance that you don't define limits around them and figure out how to disapprove of your chief, you're parting with something with vast worth. 1. Your Health It's hard to tell when to define limits around your wellbeing at work on the grounds that the decrease is so continuous. Permitting worry to develop, losing rest, and sitting the entire day without practicing all include. Before you know it, you're scouring your throbbing back with one hand and your zombie-like eyes with the other, and you're looking down at your recently obtained paunch. The key here is to not let things sneak up on you, and the manner in which you do that is by keeping a predictable daily schedule. Consider what you have to do to keep yourself sound (going for strolls during lunch, not showing up on Saturday or Sunday, accepting your excursions as booked), make an arrangement, and stick to it regardless. On the off chance that you don't, you're permitting your work to exceed its limits. 2. Your Family It's anything but difficult to let your family languish over your work. A considerable lot of us do this since we consider our to be as a methods for keeping up our families. We have musings, for example, I have to get more cash-flow so my children can attend a university obligation free. Though these contemplations are benevolent, they can trouble your family with the greatest obligation of each of the an absence of value time with you. At the point when you're on your deathbed, you won't recollect how much cash you made for your mate and children. You'll recollect the recollections you made with them. 3. Your Sanity While we as a whole have our own degrees of this regardless, you don't owe a sliver of it to your boss. An occupation that takes even a little part of your rational soundness is taking more than it's qualified for. Your rational soundness is something that is hard for your manager to monitor. You need to screen it all alone and set great cutoff points to keep yourself solid. Frequently, it's your life outside of work that keeps you rational. At the point when you've placed in a decent day's (or week's) worth of work and your supervisor needs more, the most profitable thing you can do is say no, and afterward proceed to make the most of your companions and leisure activities. Along these lines, you come back to work revived and de-focused. You positively can work additional hours in the event that you need to, yet it's imperative to have the option to disapprove of your manager when you need time away from work. 4. Your Identity While your work is a significant piece of your character, it's risky to permit your work to turn into your entire personality. You realize you've permitted this to go excessively far when you ponder what's imperative to you and work is all that (or a large portion of what) rings a bell. Having a personality outside of work is about something beyond having a great time. It likewise encourages you calm pressure, develop as an individual, and maintain a strategic distance from burnout. 5. Your Contacts While you do owe your manager your best exertion, you absolutely don't owe the person in question the contacts you've created through the span of your profession. Your contacts are a result of your difficult work and exertion, and keeping in mind that you may impart them to your organization, they have a place with you. 6. Your Integrity Giving up your honesty makes you experience huge measures of pressure. When you understand that your activities and convictions are no longer in arrangement, it's an ideal opportunity to make it understood to your manager that you're not ready to do things their way. On the off chance that that is an issue for your chief, it may be an ideal opportunity to go separate ways. Uniting it All Achievement and satisfaction regularly rely on your capacity to define great limits. When you can do this, everything else just becomes alright. More From Inc. Albeit basic in plan, the cotton gin tackled a squeezing financial issue and changed both horticultural and modern America. Simply in the wake of contrasting the economy of the American South when the presentation of the gin would we be able to value its noteworthy effect. A straightforward component with complex outcomes, the cotton gin, appeared as it showed up in Eli Whitney's patent and on the past page in a point of view drawing, changed the financial matters of the South and set a course to the Civil War.Keeping Cotton Lucrative Before the cotton gin, subjugation had been on its way outfarmers acknowledged it was increasingly costly to look after slaves, contrasted with the estimation of what they could deliver. Cotton was a problematic harvest at any rate; its fiber must be isolated from the clingy, inserted seeds by hand, a tiresome and debilitating procedure. This changed drastically, obviously, with the approach of the cotton gin. Abruptly cotton turned into a rewarding yield and a significant fare for the South. In any case, on account of this expanded interest, a lot more slaves were expected to develop cotton and gather the fields. Slave possession turned into a blazing national issue and inevitably prompted the Civil War. It was just a matter of chance that Whitney got associated with cotton developing. Subsequent to moving on from Yale University in 1792 bearing in mind the end goal of turning into an attorney, he headed out to South Carolina to acknowledge a vocation as a coach. His proprietor possessed an estate and raised some cotton. In the wake of getting into a conversation with a few estate proprietors about the reality there was no practical strategy for isolating seeds from cotton fiber, Whitney remembered it should be possible precisely. He spent the following not many months constructing a model. The gin itself contained a turning drum with wire snares or fastener like teeth that pulled cotton filaments between the teeth of a brush. The look over had teeth divided too intently for seeds to go through. Just a single part of the machine can be viewed as genuine components plan. A subsequent drum, pivoting quicker than the first and conveying brushes, served to remove the cotton strands from the first. This was driven, alongside the bigger drum, by a belt-and-pulley game plan ordinarily having a four-to-one proportion. Cotton bolls were stacked into a container, which guided them to the essence of the brush. Subsequent to being gotten through by the toothed chamber, the isolated cotton filaments developed at the left and the seeds gathered to one side. Whitneys configuration was very quickly taken and forged countless occasions. Following quite a while of patent case he got just a little portion of the riches to which he was entitled. He kept on imagining. After ten years, as a result of his notoriety for being a trend-setter, he won an administration agreement to create 10,000 musketsa up 'til now incredible number. To make the weapon locks, Whitney imagined the processing machine that is the staple of machine shop creation today. In spite of the fact that Whitneys creation just included two or three hundred kilograms of issue, it molded the eventual fate of a country and its kin; it is uncommon that a solitary invention has such a significant social impact. [Adapted from A Turn of the Crank Started the Civil War by Robert O. Woods, ASME Fellow, for Mechanical Engineering, September 2009.] Simply subsequent to looking at the economy of the American South when the presentation of the gin would we be able to value its memorable effect.

The Career Mentor Scheme, a Career-Changing Experience

The Career Mentor Scheme, a Career-Changing Experience Rebecca Lenthall is the Career Mentoring and Internships Coordinator, based on the Streatham Campus.   Rebecca Lenthall, Career Mentoring and Internships Coordinator Working for the Career Zone, we’re in the fortunate position to get that ‘aww, I’ve helped somebody today’ feeling pretty much every day in the office, but every now and then you receive an email from a student or graduate that upgrades that feeling to a full-blown case of the warm and fuzzies! In bleak early January, we received this email from a graduate who had benefitted from the Career Mentor Scheme during her time at Exeter, and two years or so later, she took the time to get in touch again and let us know just how much she feels it helped her out. Now to let her do the talking… I am an MSc Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture alumna (2014-2015) and I applied to the Career Mentor Scheme in November 2015 when I was doing an internship with a local food marketing company in Torquay (I was able to obtain this internship thanks to the Career Zone). My mentor had had an amazing career developing a publication so successful that it was sold to the Informa group. Publishing has been an ongoing dream of mine and I have always enjoyed researching, writing and communicating insights in accessible terms. Since my mentor had a relationship with Informa, she was able to help me get my foot in the door with them. That resulted in my first publishing contract ever. That was a thrilling experience that has improved the confidence I have in the commercial value of my work. Furthermore, I had a positive experience with my first publishing contract with Informa and that resulted in the publication of an additional two reports. My mentoring experience was a fantastic opportunity that has contributed to my self-esteem, my negotiation skills and the belief in my ability to reach any goal I set my mind to. My mentor was incredibly generous with her time and knowledge and she has made a lasting impact on me. This continued to give me the confidence boost that I needed in the beginning of my career. I am now a PhD student in Spain and plan to pursue a management consultant career in sustainability issues when I graduate. My mentoring experience was a fantastic opportunity that beyond the publishing contracts, has contributed to my self-esteem, my negotiation skills and the belief in my ability to reach any goal I set my mind to. My mentor was incredibly generous with her time and knowledge and she has made a lasting impact on me. This graduate’s story really showcases just how much of a positive impact a Career Mentor can have on your future career and indeed, your personal development. It really does have the potential to provide an insight like no other and to give you that boost of confidence that is sometimes just what’s needed in order to find the inspiration to fill in another application form. The deadline for applying to the May â€" October 2018 Career Mentor Scheme has now been extended to Monday 26th March (final years graduating in summer 2018 are also very welcome to apply). We really hope the lovely story above will inspire you to have glance at the mentor profiles on My Career Zone and submit an application for a mentor of your own.
